Review: GelPro Chef's Mat

After a long day in the kitchen, all I want to do is just put my feet up. Any cook who’s done a few hours worth of cooking and washing dishes in a single day would know the feeling. Aching feet and legs, and sometimes aching backs too! That’s why I like to wear rubber flip-flops around the house, to minimize the fatigue that comes from standing too long.

So when I was asked to do a review of the Gel Pro Chef’s Mat, I was intrigued. It is touted as the “most advanced and stylish kitchen floor mats ever created for use in residential kitchens”. It has been featured on HGTV, and contains a shock-absorbing gel material that eases pressure on one’s feet. (You can read more about the benefits and features at their website.)

When the mat came, I immediately unrolled it, and took my flip-flops off before standing on it. It was so comfortable! It seemed as if my feet wanted to sleep on it, it was such an “aaaah” feeling. The funniest thing, and a proof of its comfort, came that night. I’d already told my husband about the mat. In his bare feet, he went to the sink to do the dishes, and exclaimed “Oh, man, you’re right!”. I think he even wiggled his toes. It’s more comfortable than my flip-flops so I’ve taken to being barefoot when I’m standing on it. I wish I could cover my entire kitchen floor with it!

The mat comes in several colors that will complement any kitchen decor. I was at first concerned that the “woven” top would be hard to clean. It turns out it’s not actually woven, but just embossed to look like it is. So a quick wipe is all that’s needed to clean up most messes.

The mat is called a “Chef’s Mat”, but it can be used by anyone who stands on a hard surface for any significant amount of time.
