There is a reason restaurant kitchens, cash register stations, factory floors, and so many other work areas have padded mats on their floors. Being on your feet all day is hard work, and having a floor mat that provides serious cushioning is a blessing for everyone – not just those who are on their feet for 8+ hours straight or those with physical challenges.
The GelPro mat is a fantastic addition to any kitchen. It is not gratuitously squishy; indeed, it feels fairly firm. But after an hour on your feet, you'll notice how much more comfortable you feel, and you won't be willing to give it up.
Available surface textures include synthetic leather basketweave patterns, Cordoba, striated, crocodile, ostrich, and rattlesnake, in a dozen shades of browns, greens, blues, red, and black, and ranging in size from a small mat to 3 feet wide by 10 feet long. The most basic sizes and colors are available online or in various flooring, kitchen, and department stores. Larger sizes and other colors are available only at the company's Web site.
These mats are not at all inexpensive. In fact, you might suffer some degree of sticker shock, but your feet and various other body parts will thank you, and it's hard to put a price on that. If you're planning some kitchen remodeling, we would opt for a cheaper floor with a GelPro mat than a fancy floor without. (And if you can afford a fancy floor, we'd get the mat(s), too.)
If you're willing to not scrimp on your well-being by getting a GelPro mat in the first place, don't scrimp in the second place by getting one that is too small. If you spend time in front of the stove and the sink and have a regular food-prep area on some section of counter, get a mat that spans all three areas or get multiple mats. You'll be a much happier cook.See this review on the Ochef blog.
